When Brigid opened the front door, Selina said, “Brigid, as soon as the last guest left the reception we changed and rushed over.”

Without saying a word, Brigid smiled kindly and ushered them inside.

Tony removed his boater. “I hope Mrs. Standish won’t mind my being here.”

Brigid only shook her head, the kind smile still affixed to her face.

“I spent the night in George and Alma’s apartment,” Selina prattled on quickly. “They have a very nice spare room. I’d brought my bags there for the honeymoon, already packed. Clay’s taking us to the...” Selina realized she was rambling.

Brigid still hadn’t spoken, and Selina now saw that she held a handkerchief. Her eyes were red-rimmed and her face puffy, as if she’d been crying.

“Brigid—what’s going on? Why does my mother finally want to see me?”

Brigid burst into tears, burying her face in her handkerchief for a moment. “I’m sorry, Miss Selina,” she cried, “so sorry...”

“Brigid,” Selina clutched the woman’s shoulder, “what aren’t you telling me?”

“Your mother—she’s been so sick—she’s wasted away to almost nothing. She thought she could conquer what’s ailing her—but she can’t—because she’s dying.”

“Dying?” Selina gasped, as Tony put an arm around her.

Brigid nodded, wiping her eyes. “I wanted you to come today because—because I don’t think she has much time left, and she’s finally realized that. After the wedding—I told her you’d come by. She wants to see you. And the truth is, she’s wanted to see you each time you’ve come here, but she didn’t want to alarm you—with how ill she’s been—and how—how she looks. Miss Selina—go up to her now. This might be the last time you see her.”

“Brigid—no!” Selina cried. “This can’t be.” She turned to Tony, weeping into his chest. He held her tightly, as her shoulders heaved. “Why didn’t she want me with her?” Selina said through angry tears. “I could’ve done something—cared for her—prayed with her...”

“Now she’s willing to see you,” Tony said softly. “Go to her now.”

“Yes, Miss Selina,” Brigid said, “go...she needs you.”

Selina pulled from Tony’s arms. Lifting the skirt of her pale blue suit, she ran up the stairs to the first floor, and then up the grand staircase to the second. She rushed down the hall, hearing the wide-plank floorboards creak beneath her feet. Yet when Selina reached her mother’s bedroom door, she stopped abruptly, fearful of what she’d find behind it. Her mother had appeared sickly the last time she’d seen her, but now, near death, how would she look?

Selina inhaled deeply. She lifted her hand to the brass doorknob and turned it. She quietly opened the door, only to be greeted by the stench of illness. A faint smell of urine and the odor of alcohol from a pain narcotic lingered in the air. The room was dark. Heavy velvet drapes covered the windows, blocking out the daylight.

“Mother,” Selina said softly, as she tiptoed into the room.

Lavinia stirred from sleep. “Selina?”

“It’s me,” Selina said in a small voice.

“Turn on the lamp... I want to see you,” Lavinia rasped.
